California's Budget Crisis -- Back to Square One
State budget negotiations appear to be going nowhere, even as the fiscal crisis grows worse by the day. On Wednesday, Governor Schwarzenegger made a public plea for new bipartisan efforts to resolve the state's massive $40 billion deficit.

Green Colleges and the Budget Crisis
California and the incoming Obama administration are playing up the 'green economy' as a key to recovery. The state's community colleges are responding with new programs to train a new 'green-collar' work force. But the promise of the new initiatives may be undermined by California's deepening fiscal crisis -- and a new round of community college budget cuts.

Coping with Layoffs
The latest federal unemployment figures are due out Friday, and economists say the numbers aren't likely to be pretty. California already has one of the highest unemployment rates in the nation at 8.4 percent, and several thousand more Californians are expected to be laid off early this year. In the wake of a shrinking job market, we look at how Californians are coping.

Leon Panetta, the former congressman from Monterey and former White House chief of staff, will reportedly be the next director of the CIA. President-elect Obama could make the pick official today.

Medical Pot ID Card Battle
A San Bernardino man is suing to force the county to issue ID cards for medical marijuana patients. The county is balking because even though marijuana is approved for medical use in California, it's still banned under federal law. A group of patients and providers gathered at the local courthouse yesterday to protest.
